Anghiari

Anghiari, with its fairytale castle perched high above the Tiber valley, is an Etruscan / Roman enclave that has retained its mediaeval portals and high ramparts as well as its stunning panoramas.  It is a focal point for exploring the culture and pristine environment of the Tiber valley.

A precipitous main road catapults you straight downhill across the plain to Sansepolcro, birthplace of Piero della Francesca and the field where the battle of Anghiari, a turning point in the history of Italy was fought.

A museum in Anghiari displays copies of Leonardo da Vinci’s magnificent cartoons depicting horses in combat, inspired by the battle, while only a few minutes drive north from the Conventino is the celebrated birthplace in the Apennine foothills of Michelangelo, his great rival. In the opposite direction at an equal distance lies the hilltown of Monterchi which boasts the superbly restored “Madonna del Parto” by Piero della Francesca.

Further afield

Within an easy day trip from Il Conventino are the towns of Arezzo (where “Life is Beautiful” was filmed) as well as Florence (Firenze - 80 kms = 1 and 3/4 hours away), Siena (95 kms = 2 hours maximum), Pisa, Cortona and Perugia. Arezzo, only 25 minutes away by car, lies on the Intercity Milan-Rome trainline, and fast trains provide a quick and cheap way to the town centres of Bologna, Florence and Rome. Rome airport is about three hours drive away.

Local activities

Anghiari is surrounded by excellent, but modestly priced,  restaurants featuring local specialities like truffles and porcini mushrooms. You may also want to experiment with produce purchased at the vibrant Wednesday market in the Conventino’s huge, well-equipped kitchen and dine on the lawn or in the shade of the pergolas.
